K-5 TYPING SKILLS
Correct Finger Placement Correct Posture Increase Accuracy Increase Words Per Minute (WPM)

WPM Goals

Grade 1: 5-10

Grade 2: 10-15

Grade 3: 15-20

Grade 4: 20-25

Grade 5: 25-30


Timeframe

Grade 1: 30 minutes per day for the month of April; reinforcement for the remainder of the year through integration of keyboarding into lessons (minimum 30 minutes per week)

 

Grade 2: 30 minutes per day for the month of October; reinforcement for the remainder of the year through integration of keyboarding into lessons (minimum 60 minutes per week)


Grade 3: 30 minutes per day for the month of October; reinforcement for the remainder of the year through integration of keyboarding into lessons (minimum 90 minutes per week)

 

Grade 4: 30 minutes per day for the month of October; reinforcement for the remainder of the year through integration of keyboarding into lessons (minimum 120 minutes per week)

 

Grade 5: 30 minutes per day for the month of October; reinforcement for the remainder of the year through integration of keyboarding into lessons (minimum 150 minutes per week)

 

Assessment

Grades 1-5: pre-test during the first lesson, monitor progress, administer post-test at the end of the unit. Record a final test score to be administered at the end of the year, using the same test that was used for the pre-test.  Teachers should record the students’ results in a Google spreadsheet for sharing as necessary.
